King Hatuhaha or King of Pelauw? Testing the Validity of Power Claims in the History of Uli Hatuhaha

Abstract

This article tests the claim of King Pelauw as the "King of Hatuhaha" in the history of Uli Hatuhaha. This study confirms that Hatuhaha is not a single power of one country, but a customary alliance of five countries, namely Pelauw, Rohomoni, Kabau, Kailolo, and Hulaliu. Using the normative-historical legal method, this article reads François Valentijn's records, customary sources, and legal literature related to the legitimacy of power. The results of the study show that Koning van Hataoa's designation of King Pelauw is more accurately understood as a title claim, not evidence of the collective recognition of all Uli Hatuhaha. The claim was also denied by Rohomoni and did not show a joint mandate. Therefore, the claim of King Pelauw as the "King of Hatuhaha" does not have an adequate historical, customary, and constitutional basis.
