The Environmental Crisis in Indonesia from an Islamic Perspective: A Study of Ecological Degradation and the Responsibilities of the Khalifah

This study aims to examine the environmental crisis in Indonesia from an Islamic perspective and to analyze its causes and proposed solutions through the approach of Islamic eco-theology. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method. The formal object of this study is the concept of Islamic eco-theology, while the material object is the environmental crisis in Indonesia. The scope of the study encompasses issues of deforestation, environmental pollution, climate change, ecosystem degradation, and biodiversity loss. The context of this study is the relationship between humans, nature, and God from an Islamic perspective. The results and discussion in this study indicate that the environmental crisis in Indonesia is not only caused by technical and economic factors but is also influenced by a moral and spiritual crisis in humanity’s perception of nature. The concepts of khalifah, amanah, mizan (balance), and the prohibition against fasad in the Qur’an affirm that humans bear the responsibility to preserve the environment.
